Despite of ship demolition on a tonnage basis, most of the countries are being repeatedly questioned about the need of recycling the ship. This is obviously the fact that each and everything that reaches on its end of life must be recycled and reused as it adds to the sustainability of our natural resources. But still, there are some other explanation that would clear you about the need of recycling the ship towards environment and the society.

Here in this blog, we are going to talk about the need of recycling the ship or end of life vessels.

· It results in creation of jobs: The materials that are extracted and scrapped out of the ships create a localized industry which involves employment of hundreds of people from marginalized segments of the society. This involves employment of both Semi skilled and unskilled workers that are trained for working at ship recycling yards for dismantling and breaking of end-of-life ships.

· It boosts the local economy: No one can deny from the fact that the ship recycling industry is the major provider of second-hand goods such as furniture, machinery, paints, hardware items and more. This clears the fact that ship recycling industry supports small scale industries by providing them with second hand goods.

· It recovers the metal scrap: The metal scrap that is obtained from the vessels during ship recycling contains both ferrous and non ferrous scrap. The ferrous scrap is then divided into Re rollable scrap and melting scrap. All of this metal scrap is sold at a premium and it helps in the Industries that produce metal. This metal scrap is then used to form finished products.

· It reduces the greenhouse emissions: One of the positive effects of scrapping out the metal is that it is used to produce the finished goods. If the finished goods are made using the metal ore, then it wastes too much of the natural resources. But by producing the finished products using metal scrap extracted out of the end-of-life vessels, results in reduced greenhouse gases. In addition to this, the need for metal mining also reduces which further adds to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The above-mentioned aspects of the ship recycling industry clears the fact that how recycling of end of life vessels is beneficial for both the environment as well as for the society. However, some of the doubts have been raised on the manner of dismantling of the ships but still recycling plays a vital role for the economy.
